Self Love Requires Honesty | #SLS

I've come to realize, the hard way, that I've had and still have a lot of healing to do! Self Love is not an overnight thing *insert Percy Sledge song*. It takes time to reach a comfortable level of contentment with self. It's a journey; one of upward toil but one of positive growth. In our journey of Self Love, it is integral that we seek to know ourselves, accept who we are and live freely in our truth.  In seeking to know and embrace our truest selves, a process of self reflection and introspection helps. The trauma; experiences that we go through have fashioned us into the persons that we are today. Our personalities, our self esteem; the way we interact with others, our imposed standards, our expectations are all influenced by the way we see ourselves; by the way we think and feel about ourselves. It's 'human nature' to first be negative before positive and unappreciative before we see good, so in order to change our thinki...

AUBURN FIRE BEAUTY!!

If you've been with CupcakeDelect since 2012, you'll know that the act of changing ones hair colour unlocks the portal to a world of creativity and inspiration over here! We're at it again, and with the same amount of love, care and kaleidoscope power that we're known for.

Meet Jael. Jael is one of our Be Inspired Club Members with a love for her natural hair and a desire to insight change in the minds of those who are on the fence when it comes to dying their natural hair.

Jael wanted an auburn, fire - red change. With her willingness and lofty head of virgin hair we set out to accomplish the awesomeness!

The following is the electric video of how we achieved her fire beauty and the fun Jael had doing so.

Info We Know You'll Find Handy:

Auburn Day 1
  • Dark & Lovely: Fade Resist - Vivacious Red (Back of Head) No. 394
  • Garnier - True Red (Front of Head)
  • Petroleum Jelly (Applied to the perimeter of her head to prevent skin from changing colour)
Auburn Day 2
  • Dark & Lovely: Fade Resist - Vivacious Red (Back of Head). This proved to be the more potent product that gave the best colour payoff of the two used on Day 1. Her nautral 4C hair loved it!
  • We used all that came in the kit. Two boxes of the Dark & Lovely were sufficient for all of her hair.

CupcakeDelect Notes & Tips When Colouring Natural Hair

  • No Bleach? We essentially did not have a special lifting/lightening process to achieve her>>>> colour. The Dark & Lovely Fade Resist (like many other box dyes) contains developer/hydrogen peroxide that allows for the hair to lift to the correct level while at the same time achieving colour. It is deemed the safer option when compared to using bleach baths with powder and developer first. Safety also is about how the health of the hair is prior to dying, testing before treatment, reconstructing treatments after and hair care that requires some patience (protective styling, safe detangling, upkeeping moisture levels etc.)
  • Work In Sections! It is always essential that you maintain a tangle, knot free environment when working with textured, kinky, curly hair. We love working in sections and we do so throughout all hair care processes. In Jael's hair, we worked in small sections when dying, and bigger ones to rinse and condition.
  • Metal! The use of Metal/Steel is discourage when dying hair. We used them to section the hair prior to dying but they did not come into contact with the dye. If metal comes into contact with dye it may weaken and render the dye ineffective or even change the colour payoff.
  • Heat? Yes! We smile when some abhor the fact that we use heat in our dying process. Many advise against it stating that it damages the hair follicles and can cause the dyed hair to break and fall out. We've done our research. We use no more that 20 mins of low heat to ensure that the Dark & Lovely dye penetrates faster; fully saturating the strands. Low Heat, for us opens the cuticles and allows for an intense colour payoff. Jael has not experienced any hair damage or unusual fall out or breakage after her dye sessions with me. Her 1st session was done at the beginning of September 2016 and now, March 2017, her hair is healthy and radiant!
  • Cold Water! After allowing her hair to cool from the Thermal heat process, we rinsed with room temperature water. We actually recommend using only room temperature water throughout your dye job day (when shampooing, conditioning etc) Cold - not hot - water helps to close the cuticles and lock in the colour treatment and nutrients from the conditioners. Using hot water after the dye process to rinse might cause a reversion of your good work; some of the dye might run out!
  • Again, No Tangles! Fingers and a wide tooth comb were used to distribute the dye and the conditioners through all her strands, working from ends to root.
  • Condition! We conditioned with the Dark & Lovely Moisture Rich Conditioner followed by our Homemade Strengthening Deep Conditioner. It is important to ensure that dyed hair is deep conditioned to give it the moisture - protein nutrition that it needs.

The Reveal

One of Jael's favourite styles as an Auburn Fire Beauty is the twist out. She specially twisted her tresses to reveal the gorgeous fluffy tendrils. We hope you enjoy our CupcakeDelect Hair Care post.
